Fairport Harbor Public Library has recently received two grants for new library programs – Kindergarten Readiness and Computer Classes.

The library has been selected by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to receive a $2000 grant for a summer Kindergarten Readiness program. The Kindergarten Club is for children entering kindergarten in the fall and their caregivers. It will be held Wednesdays, 10:00-11:00am from June 14 through July 26. The program will help the children get ready to start kindergarten by learning and practicing early literacy skills, social and emotional skills, and motor skills. There will be activities for parents and caregivers too. Registration is needed but this program is open to children attending any school district.
The grant funds will be used to add new early reader books to the library collection as well as learning enrichment materials for families to borrow such as STEAM kits, early literacy backpacks, and educational games to practice and reinforce reading and other academic skills.
The Kindergarten Club will be led by the library’s new youth associate, Danielle Jones, a degreed and licensed teacher who has years of experience working with young children. Ms. Jones says she is looking forward to having children and their families at the library this summer for the kindergarten club as well as other activities including math club, art club, reading with therapy dogs, and the summer reading rewards program.
The Walmart Community Grant Program has awarded the library $1000 to begin a series of computer classes for adults. This grant will allow the library to supply laptop computers for group classes on topics including computer basics, online genealogy research, Microsoft applications, Google Docs, email, downloading e-media, searching the library catalog, and using social media. The computer classes will begin in the fall.
The library is extremely grateful for the generosity and support of these two organizations.
